Chimta is a traditional percussion instrument originating from India and Pakistan, predominantly used in Punjabi folk music and religious songs (bhajans and kirtans). The instrument resembles a large metal pair of tongs with small attached metal jingles, which emit a clear, tinkling sound when moved. The player holds the chimta in one hand and sets it ringing with a wrist motion. It often accompanies dance and singing performances, especially in genres such as bhangra.
