Chekere | Djabara | Shekere

The Chekere (Shekere, Djabara) is a musical instrument originating from West Africa and is now used in various music styles around the world. It is a kind of gourd that has been hollowed out and covered with a net of beads or seeds, which are strung and wrapped around the gourd.

When a player wants to play the Chekere, they hold the instrument by its neck and shake it, or strike it against their hand or foot, creating various sounds. Another way of playing involves pulling the strings upwards. The beads or seeds on the net create a rhythmic jingling sound, often used to accentuate the rhythm of the music or to help other players in the band keep time with the Chekere.

In traditional West African music, the Chekere is often used in ensembles, accompanying drums and dancers. It is also used in various styles of Latin American music, such as salsa and samba.
