This symphonic composition, also known under the German name "Die Moldau", is the second part of the cycle "My Country" by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. Smetana was inspired by the Vltava river, which flows through Bohemia and is the longest river in the country. The composition musically describes the journey of the river from its sources, through its course in the Czech landscape, to its confluence with the Elbe. It's hard to believe that Smetana was already deaf when he composed this captivating and poignant musical piece.
Smetana's "Vltava" is a great example of program music, capable of telling a story and depicting natural sceneries through orchestral colors and motifs.
The melody sounds even more powerful when you take out the small music mechanism from the box. Since the mechanism is mounted on a small wooden board, this music box will develop its sound especially well when you press it against a large resonating body, such as a table, chair, or box.
