A Pair of Meditation Balls - Baoding
Baoding balls are also known as "Chinese health balls", "Chinese meditation balls", or "exercise balls".
Baoding is a city in northern China, famous for producing small, ringing balls called Jiànshen qiú. This translates to "balls for physical health," and their use dates back to the 14th century during the Chinese Ming Dynasty.
In the past, people used nuts and fruit to train their skills. Later, the balls also had a spiritual effect. Now they are made of stone or metal, and spiritual belief says that if you let both sound balls rotate in your hand, the female yin and male yang should harmonize according to Taoist doctrine.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), they stimulate numerous acupressure points on the hand through rotational movements. Additionally, it is believed that exercising with Baoding balls promotes the fine motor skills of the fingers and thus promises relief for arthritis of the hands and finger joints.
For sound lovers, however, its musical use is also interesting. Our Baoding balls consist of a hollow chromed steel ball, inside which is enclosed a spring and a small freely moving steel marble. Rotation creates gentle, meditative tones, the intensity of which can be increased by sharp movements and shaking. Sound balls are therefore best suited as instruments with sound effects.
